Phase 2 of the WIC Food Package Update is here. This phase expands food options for women and children, making it easier to choose foods that fit your needs and preferences. New updates include:
π₯ More plant-based milk options (beyond soy) πΎ Additional whole grain and nut butter choices π Canned fish now available for all participants over 12 months π Option to substitute juice for more fruits and vegetables πΏ Fresh-cut herbs can now be purchased with your fruit & veggie benefit
Phase 1 focused on infant packages; reducing baby cereal and offering the option to receive fruit & vegetable benefits starting at 6 months instead of baby food.
There are new work requirement rules handed down by the federal government that could impact Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for able-bodied adults without dependents βalso referred to as ABAWDs. In short, the rule change means unemployed, non-disabled adults ages 18 to 64 without a child under age 14 in their household can only receive SNAP benefits for a total of three full months before having to meet an 80-hour-per-month work requirement.
But there are also exemptions to this rule, including some that may help individuals living with behavioral health issues continue collecting benefits without meeting this threshold. There are also opportunities to volunteer to help meet this new requirement.
On Friday we held our spring food box distribution and served customers visiting the pantry for regular groceries, 10am-6pm. We distributed 40 holiday boxes and served 18 neighbors (some also picked up holiday boxes) in the regular food pantry, including five new families.
Thank you to our many volunteers that showed up on Friday and during the week to serve our neighbors.
If you would like to support our mission, the pantry shelves are low on the following:
